Finding Your Visual Voice

If you photograph long enough, the technical aspects of photography become comfortable and feel easy. However, many folks who reach this plateau may begin to feel they aren’t improving all that much and may feel stuck. The good news is that when you reach the point of technical proficiency - this is where the art of photography begins! Learning to thoughtfully compose your images is key to your continued growth as a photographer and allows your unique visual voice to emerge!

This workshop is designed to equip you with the tools to find and strengthen your visual expression. Over five weeks, Finding Your Visual Voice will elevate your photography through insightful presentations, assignments that allow you to apply the lecture content and constructive critiques will support this evolution of your self expression.

We begin with identifying the basic building blocks of composition: shape, line, texture, and negative space. Next, we study how to arrange these building blocks through the concepts of dominance, rhythm, proportion, balance and perspective to create visual movement and depth. This will help you guide the viewer through your photograph intentionally. Finally, we take these new compositional tools and learn how to explore our subject matter to create images that are not only more impactful, but express your intentional visual voice.

Included for workshop participants is a 1-hour, one-on-one meeting with Doug that can be scheduled within two months of the conclusion of the course to provide support and answer questions that may come up as you engage in the course material and grow in your photographic journey!

This class taught me to think and plan but also recognize concepts that I was already using but just didn’t have a name for them. So very glad I took this course. Thanks for your patience, your great ideas and the ease with which you convey the material. I learned so much!
