Creativity on the Coast of Maine
A DJP Photo Retreat

OCTOBER 11 - 15, 2026

DJP is excited to share a new photography retreat focused on stretching your creativity while connecting to other photographers.

Our home base will be the storybook setting of the historic Grey Havens Inn on Georgetown Island in mid-coast Maine. Built in 1904, the Inn is filled with authentic charm and is perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. Our group will occupy the entire inn for an intimate and intensive experience.

There is something undeniably special about Maine that has fueled artists' creativity for centuries.  We'll soak in that same energy to influence our own work as we photograph nearby sandy beaches like Popham Beach and Reid State Park, explore small fishing harbors, and walk through autumn woods and natural areas along the coast. We will enjoy discussions about new approaches, daily creative assignments, and each participant will develop their own creative project over the week. There will be helpful critiques and image sharing to inspire each other's ideas.

Doug is known for the sense of fun and community he weaves into his workshops. We will focus on playing and growing in a truly supportive group. And, while the retreat is meant to challenge you, it is also meant to fill your creative cup. There will be reflective time to sit on the porch taking in the view and to hang out with new friends over fresh seafood.

If you feel stuck in a slump, want to be challenged with new ways of photographing, or just want to enjoy a kick of inspiration with a great group of fellow photographers, please join us for a creative retreat on the Coast of Maine!

LODGING

The retreat takes place at the Grey Havens Inn on Georgetown Island, Maine. The DJP retreat group will occupy all lodging rooms of the Inn. Each participant will select their room on a first-come, first-served basis. Each room is different and is filled with the character of a genuine Maine Inn. Choose between queen and king beds; ocean or garden views; and second or third floor. Our group will receive a special discounted rate (ranging from $158 - $278 + tax/night), which includes the Inn’s delicious breakfast. DJP will send a reservation link to participants after workshop registration.

To maintain the sense of peace and tranquility, the Inn does not have televisions or phones, but does have high speed wifi (view list of amenities here).

Important note: due to the historic nature and structural design of the Inn, all lodging rooms are accessed via stairs - there is no elevator and rooms are located on the second and third floors. To learn more, please see the Inn’s accessibility statement.

TRAVEL

Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to/from the workshop and during the workshop.

The closest airport is Portland International Jetport (PWM), about an hour from the Inn. You will find that several major car rental companies have office locations on-site at the airport. For transportation to and from field shoots, we suggest that you carpool to get to know fellow students.

Doug Johnson Photography is not responsible for cancellations due to medical or other emergencies or reimbursement of non-refundable airline tickets, hotel rooms in the event of a workshop cancellation. Please consider the purchase of travel insurance.

ACTIVITY LEVEL

Hiking up to 2 miles, marked paths and trails. Walking on sandy beaches. Must be able to ascend and descend stairs to access lodging rooms.

To help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, participants are expected to be in good physical health. You must be able to carry your own photo gear, be prepared for variable weather and be able to walk in outdoor terrain that will involve uneven surfaces.

If you have any questions about the workshop conditions, please contact Doug before registering. While we make every effort to support participants, if we find that the activities are more demanding than your abilities allow, we may need to adjust your participation to ensure your well-being and the smooth flow of the workshop.

What sets DJP apart from other workshops I have attended are the critiques where we gather as a group, learn together, see the possibilities in the images, and have the most amazing learning experience. This is where true growth occurred for me. My viewpoint was expanded, creativity exploded, and my ability to “see” the possibilities in my photographic journey was forever changed!
