Black and white photography has captivated us since Joseph Niepce recorded the first photograph on a metal plate in1825. While our photographic tools have evolved, the enthusiasm for the black-and-white process has endured.
This workshop will help you see compositionally with a monochromatic eye and guide you through post-processing techniques in Lightroom and Silver Efex Pro. We’ll learn how the black and white process emphasizes tone, texture, shape, and form – elements that can be less noticeable in a color photograph. You will learn to analyze any scene for B&W possibilities, use the power of HDR processing to maximize B&W opportunities, and use Lightroom and Nik Silver Efex to support your B&W vision.
From our historic Art Deco hotel located in the theater district, just steps from Times Square, we’ll explore the most photographic gems of the Big Apple including Central Park, Grand Central Station, Brooklyn Bridge, 9/11 Memorial Park, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral — to name a few. Our field shoots are scheduled around the best times of day for good light and Doug will work with you, answer your questions, and talk you through any challenging situations. In the classroom, we will help you understand the processing software that will take your black and white photographs to a whole new level.

Our Workshop begins on Sunday, May 16 at 5:00pm. The workshop concludes on Thursday, May 20 at 6:00pm.
Location Highlights: Central Park (The Mall, Literary Walk), Battery Park, Grand Central Station, Brooklyn Bridge and Park, 9/11 Memorial Park, Flatiron Building, St. Patricks Cathedral, the Highline, MOMA, NYSE, The Oculus.

Workshop Details
LODGING
Our workshop will be based at the Hotel Edison, in the heart of the Theater District, steps from Times Square. A room block has been arranged from May 16 - 20, 2027 (5 nights). Our group will receive a special discounted rate of $314 + tax/night for a single queen and $355 +tax/night for a double queen room. Please reference Doug Johnson Photography to receive the special group rate. *Note: Room block will be released to the public on April 16, 2027, so please secure your room before this date.
TRAVEL
Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to/from the workshop and during the workshop. The closest airport to our hotel is LaGuardia Airport (LGA), approximately 8 miles away. Participants might also consider John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK), which is approximately 16 miles from the workshop hotel.
You are responsible for your own transportation costs during the workshop. Since parking at the hotel and NYC shooting locations is very expensive (and difficult to find), we will be using local transportation companies (taxis, Uber or Lyft) and public transportation.
Doug Johnson Photography is not responsible for cancellations due to medical or other emergencies or reimbursement of non-refundable airline tickets, hotel rooms in the event of a workshop cancellation. Please consider the purchase of travel insurance.
ACTIVITY LEVEL
Walking up to 3 miles on city streets and sidewalks, including stairways. Participants must be able to carry their camera gear/backpack during city walks and on public transportation/taxis. Comfortable footwear is essential.
To help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, participants are expected to be in good physical health. You must be able to carry your own photo gear, be prepared for variable weather (including heat) and be able to walk in outdoor terrain that will involve uneven surfaces.

While we make every effort to support participants, if we find that the activities are more demanding than your abilities allow, we may need to adjust your participation to ensure your well-being and the smooth flow of the workshop.
