Expand your creativity while trading northern winter-time for the warmth and enchantment of Mexico! Our location is the vibrant colonial city of San Miguel de Allende, filled with amazing architecture, color, pattern, culture, and cuisine. Our base will be a boutique hotel in the heart of the historic center, from which we will explore the city’s visual tapestry of cobbled lanes, historic doorways, church towers, and colorful markets. We’ll walk with our guide through San Miguel’s character filled neighborhoods to explore each neighborhood’s unique energy, colorful murals, old stairways, shaded paths, and hillside streets.

We will also explore the landscape and artistic traditions just outside of the San Miguel, including Atotonilco, a quaint village best known for its UNESCO listed sanctuary. We’ll photograph the elaborately painted chapel interiors, which have led to the nickname “the Sistine Chapel of Mexico.” We will also spend a day visiting the city of Guanajuato, a former sliver mining colonial city tucked in a mountain valley with acclaimed “callejones,” historic, narrow, cobbled passageways lined with colorful houses, balconies, shops, and folklore. We’ll enjoy endless photo discoveries walking among the narrow streets with brightly colored walls, balconies, and hidden plazas.

While you can always photograph any image that inspires you, the focus of our week will be on expanding the expressive possibilities of photography by building multiples (diptychs, triptychs and grids). We will cover both the advantages and challenges of working in multiples while sharing plenty of examples to spark ideas for photo grids you may want to create with your own work. Using Adobe Lightroom Classic, you will learn how to lay out multiples and then save the templates so you can use them again and again. Assignments will give you the opportunity to experiment and critiques will provide helpful feedback to strengthen your ability to work in this creative format.

During the week, you will create lots of new images, yet this workshop builds in space for you to relax and enjoy San Miguel’s fabulous food, browse the art shops and markets, or spend some focus time building out your portfolio of multiples.

This workshop is great for photographers who are new to creating multiples, those wanting to take their current work in multiples to the next level, and those looking for a way to re-invigorate their approach to photography. Photographers who have already taken a DJP multiples workshop are also encouraged to attend to push their work further and capture a wealth of material for creating new images.

Please note: Because we will be using Adobe Lightroom Classic software to construct multiples, participants must have at least an intermediate skill level of working with their images in Lightroom. This workshop focuses on making diptychs, triptychs, and grids - it is not focused on creating multiple exposures.
